This group later changed their name to The Beach Boys and the Pendleton shirt became popular among American youth. Kay brought his oldest daughter, Martha Ann "Fannie" Kay, into the business and after learning the operation and management of the mill, she became her father's assistant. In 1876 Fannie married retail merchant C.P. (Charles Pleasant) Bishop. This proved to be a great benefit to Kay's company and to the Bishop enterprises in the combination of manufacturing and retail sales. The Bishops passed their expertise and knowledge to their three sons: Clarence, Roy, and (Robert) Chauncey. Under sponsorship of the New York-based Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Reverend Jason Lee (1803-1845) established his first mission in 1834 in the homeland of the Kalapuya, on the lowlands (Mission Bottom) adjacent to the Willamette River north of present-day Salem. Through successive missionary reinforcements, the Willamette station became the central operation to several satellite stations throughout the region.

The company's roots began in 1863 when Thomas Lister Kay made a transcontinental trek to the west coast and began working in Oregon's woolen mills. He went on to open his own woolen mill, the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill in Salem, Oregon. Kay was an immigrant from England and a weaver by trade. He had worked in various textile mills on the east coast of the United States. Before opening his own mill in Salem, he helped to set up only the second mill in Oregon at Brownsville.Over time, the suite of LES MILLS programs has grown. These days Les Mills’ offers everything from yoga to cycling, dance, martial arts, HIIT and more – and every three months we create new music and moves to ensure our team stays motivated and ahead of the game. In 1963, the Salem City Council considered supporting the Marion County Historical Society’s efforts to preserve both buildings by relocating them at a Salem city park. They considered proposals to move both the Jason Lee House and the Parsonage to either Bush’s Pasture Park or Marion Square Park. As part of their larger efforts to educate the public about the historical significance of the Jason Lee House, the Marion County Historical Society even offered the public an opportunity to tour the house on Feb. 10, 1963, before the City Council made their final decision. Lewis Judson, a member of the Marion County Historical Society, whose grandfather was a carpenter in charge of constructing the Lee House, was part of the group who offered the public tours of the Jason Lee House, while it was still in its original location on Broadway Street. For golfers who come to Malacca, the visit must include a round of golf at AKCC. The natural setting, the sheer length and the challenges of the course will make it an unforgettable experience. The designers of the course very wisely maintained a large part of the virgin jungle so as to limit as much as possible the negative ecological impact the golf course would have on the area.
