About this deal

Master of the psychological thriller genre Ross Greenwood once again proves his talent for creating engrossing and gritty novels that draw you right in and wont let go until you’ve reached the shocking ending. This is the first in the new DS Knight series by Ross Greenwood and was published by Bookouture on April 26th, 2023.

The two dead bodies are a couple of elderly hippy drifters – and those dragged into the case include a local homeless beach drifter, someone recently released from a secure mental institution, with the next dead body discovered (also drowned) a woman – all of whom seem to have been very disturbed and fearful recently.

Even with the supposedly bad guys Ross shows the complex aspects that have made them act the way they do and the cumulative affects of their own struggles with themselves and in society and the failings therein. Bestselling Ross Greenwood is back with the start of an exciting new series, perfect for fans of Mark Billingham, Ian Rankin and Peter James. I have read several of this author's books and when I saw he had a new series I definitely needed to check it out. There are lengthy conversations, as they explain to one one another what the have done/are about to do. A rich cast of characters and an explosive plot kept me turning the pages until the final dramatic twist.

This is a fabulous first book in the series and I do hope that Hector is not fast-tracked out too soon as I do kind of like him. Idid also listen to part of this book in audio format and, I have to say the narrator was a little chirpy in places for the gruesome story he was reading out! Another key character in the book is Cromer itself – the author has gained permission from a number of local businesses to feature them and this gives the book a strong authenticity. Ross indicates this is the first of a new series, so it is a good starting point if you are interested. It soon becomes clear that the murders were carefully planned and the finger of suspicion points to an organised crime gang, but as the evidence mounts, a far more sinister theory emerges.

The plot is based on a series of murders that are apparently related to a party on the beach some thirty years ago.

I then began a rather nomadic existence, living and working all over the country and various parts of the world. I like the sensitivity shown regarding mental illness and as a severe ME sufferer, I even liked the fibromyalgia/cf mentioning as that is a first for me! As mentioned previously I love the seascape and the backdrop of the events, the addition of folklore and sea shanties associated with the environment also make for a very enjoyable well rounded tale with it’s touch of the mysterious. Those connected are so varied and have many problems and this also makes trying to work out events, truths and lies very difficult. Other characters involved are a local crab fisherman who seems to find many of the bodies and a disabled man whose relationship with the group at the party or the recent events is unclear.Greenwood takes his time to delve into the psychological aspects of the characters and the emotional undercurrents of the story. edited* ever so slightly (15 words or less) due to it being slightly rushed and rambunctious, can’t have that now that I know the great man himself has read it, can I? Overall an easy but enjoyable read and I will be interested to read the next in the series set in Hunstanton (again though not one of my favourite Norfolk resorts – hopefully Wells or Holkham will feature soon although I suspect Great Yarmouth will fit the series better).
