Chinese officials carried out campaigns to reduce Chinglish in preparation for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and the Expo 2010 in Shanghai. Future times– We use the word “next” much when discussing times or events. In English you can talk about next week, next month, next semester, even next year. But we NEVER repeat the word next. So, if this is the first week of October, then the second week is next week, butwe call the third week of October 下下個星期 “Two weeks from now” or you can also say “the week after next.” Do NOT say “ next next week.” I am writing this post on a Wednesday. So, tomorrow is Thursday. But what do we call Friday? The Chinese call it 後天, but in English we do not have a specific name for it, so we call it “the day after tomorrow” or “two days from now.” How about 大後天? We do not have a specific name for that in English either, so we just call that “three days from now.”Maybe this helps:

Witnessing many Chinese governmental bodies and language organizations trying to eradicate Chinglish, Radtke said he thinks it's because China wants its opinions to be heard and its culture to be recognized globally. I, nevertheless, still believe that by preserving some of the more creative translations, Chinglish can continue to serve as a humorous introduction to some elements of Chinese thinking or the Chinese mind in general," Radtke said. "I also think that China could be more confident in introducing some of its Chinglish to the English language. Since around the world there are way more English learners than native speakers, the academic debate on who actually sets the global standard on 'correct' English is still going on."

About This Edition ISBN:Altitude: height above sea level or the surface of the earth; this is usually used for an airplane, hot air balloon, or some other manned craft. I loved Tina, especially in the beginning and then later again. She is a real friend to Jo and one of the girls who really stands by her side. I just loved her style and I loved that she wasn't afraid to tell the bullies a piece of her thoughts. It was great to see her celebrate Jo's birthday, as nobody really celebrated that in Jo's house. It is difficult trying to talk in our family cos: a) Grandparents don't speak English at all b) Mum hardly speaks any English c) Me, Bonny and Simon hardly speak Chinese d) Dad speaks Chinese and good English - but doesn't like talking In other words, we all have to cobble together tiny bits of English and Chinese into a rubbish new language I call 'Chinglish'. It is very awkward.

Chinglish by Sue Cheung - Book Review - Whispering Stories

A highlight of my teaching career was the eleven years I taught history in the Humanities Center; it was great to team-teach with an English instructor. Big thank you to @definitely books for sending me a ARC of Chinglish. This book will be in all good bookstores in September 2019! #chinglishbook Expats enjoy sharing the humorous Chinglish signs and expressions they see in China and defend their use in everyday conversations. Photo: Li Hao/GT Fortified by an army of 600 volunteers and a politburo of adroit English speakers, the [Shanghai Commission for the Management of Language Use] has fixed more than 10,000 public signs (farewell 'Teliot' and 'urine district'), rewritten English-language historical placards and helped hundreds of restaurants recast offerings. . . .The English word Chinglish is a portmanteau of Chinese and English. The Chinese equivalent is Zhōngshì Yīngyǔ ( simplified Chinese: 中式英语; traditional Chinese: 中式英語; lit.'Chinese-style English'). Since each Chinese ideogram can have many meanings and interpretations, translating Chinese ideas into English is, indeed, extremely difficult. Because of this, Chinese-English hybrid words [such as "No noising" for "Quiet, please," and "slippercrafty" for "treacherously icy road"] are often viewed with amusement by the rest of the English-speaking world. Nevertheless, this abundance of new words and phrases, unlikely as it may seem, is one of the prime drivers of the globalization of the English language." With Grandparents who don’t speak any English, a Mother who barely speaks English, a Father who just doesn’t speak and Jo and her siblings not being able to speak Chinese this is the start of the wild, unpredictable and often hilarious goings-on in Jo’s life.
