Named for their sharp, pointed beaks, in most parts of the world hawksbill turtles feed primarily on reef sponges—invertebrate organisms whose bodies contain tiny, indigestible glass needles. This is the most dangerous time of a sea turtle’s life and nine out of ten new turtles are killed by predators.
